Tips For Urology Patients

Men and their wives need to stand up when they wish for an all male medical team for an intimate male procedure or surgery. Men should request that only their male urologist be present for a Digital Rectal exam or any intimate male procedures or examinations such as prostate biopsies in offices. Tell them that you don't want any nurses or assistants in the room. It might be a good idea for you to request that your doctor put up a sign on the door that says "Don't Disturb!" because sometimes nurses and assistants walk in rooms while intimate examinations are taking place.

If you need to have surgery such as vasectomy, prostatectomy, or hernia surgery that would expose your male organs, we encourage you to talk to the doctor who is doing your surgery and the hospital about how you would like to have an all male medical team in the operating room. This would include the surgeon, anesthesiologist, nurses, and scrub. If you cannot get that assurance, you should look at getting another doctor or having the procedure done at another hospital that can accommodate your wishes for an all male team.

Prostate biopsies can be very painful and can cause a lot of bleeding. Be sure that you request blanket or garments to cover yourself to protect your modesty. You will probably need a lot of Kleenex after the biopsy so be sure you ask your doctor to provide you with them on the examining table. You should ask your doctor to give you time to clean up after the biopsy privately.
